Chris Garvi is an independent photographer based in Marseille, south of France. French born, he studied English litterature and civilisation at university. As a consequence, his work is influenced by both french and american photography at the same time. Chris works on stories, documentary or imaginary, paying a particular attention to the narrative aspects of his projects.
About “Marseile” Chris says: Marseille – in a hundred ways I’ve tried to photograph this city I moved in a couple of years ago – large format, medium format, 24×36, colors and black and white – but always, I found something was missing. One day, as I was carrying my leica with a roll of kodak portra, I made a picture, a little by chance I guess. I remember the exact moment when I made this picture (the one I call “1/3” with the girl in a shadow on the right, a man in a shadow on the left and one in the light in the middle). I was literally struck from head to toe, feeling so exicted that I screamed of joy ! I knew I had found a way to photograph Marseille at last… The narrative aspect has narrowed since them. For this project i’m looking to talk about the whole range of human emotions : love, sadness, loneliness, illusion, relationships, etc. For this long term project I have chosen to work with a leica M6, a 35 mm lens and Kodak Portra 400.
