For eight years, photographer Jose Diniz searched the Brazilian coastline as a castaway. All the way from Maranhão to Rio Grande do Sul – extending through Uruguay – he captured images of people, buildings, the horizon and the sea always from a particular perspective: facing, under or over the water.
Contrary to what many might think, Diniz did not use a periscope (optical device that allows one to see over obstacles, as in submarines), as suggested by the name of the book . “The title is just a metaphor for the way of observation I have chosen. It is as if my eyes were not enough to see and shoot in those conditions. The camera was at a point below the horizon and the waves were moving mountains”.
