Adam Entwistle: PORTALS

Till your eyes foist a vision dazzling on the wind, line 14, Sylvia Plath, November Graveyard

Bold yet intimate nature scenes induce mystical experiences in the viewer, charged by the capturing of the photographer’s projection. A bleak, melancholic beauty forms from vast open moorland. Along with imposing ancient stones from a time before the industrial revolution – when the landscape was wild and filled with forests. Historical legend tells that these areas inspired poets and artists, as well as pagan druids.

120mm analogue photography, digitally scanned, and subtly enhanced. Taken between the end of 2015 and the start of 2016, the images are originally photographed using a medium format Holga camera. The locations are in rural parts of Yorkshire and Lancashire, in the North West of England. With a personal connection to the artist’s metamorphosis, the specific areas also hold historic and local significance. Discovered by accident, word of mouth, or investigation, the places share a relationship to people through memory. Use of blur, light leak and multiple exposures, communicate an ephemeral portal.

Adam Entwistle’s PORTALS is the symbolic capturing and presentation of a personal re-connection. The intent being to open a visual portal through which the viewer also connects to their authentic self. Visionary experiences go beyond words, which are the symbols of a modern language disconnected from subjective reality. Yet images and nature can be universal in conveying a glimpse of ephemeral experience.
